Here we have a most versatile tool for drawing tape, ribbon or cord through the heavily eyeleted, looped and laced-together fashions dominating pre-20th century life. Removable lacings interchanged between garments were economical, and saved on wear and tear on wash day when they could be set aside. Detachable, laced parts of outfits, like the sleeves of sleeveless waistcoats, could afford the wearer a variety of ensembles or a change with the weather, without having to buy or make more clothing. The blunt end bodkin, precursor to the needle, was essential for this. Our handmade sterling bodkin with rigelled engraving down to the rounded tip is flat to fit the most narrow pocket, and has two holes: one small round hole for lacing with a cord or thread; and a slit for lacing with a ribbon. Our handmade brass bodkin based on originals has a flattened head pierced with a slit opening, and narrows into a round shank, punctuated by a ball "point." Unlike steel, neither will rust, sliding effortlessly through the sewn pocket, the set of eyelets, or attachment rings; a beautiful gift addition for yourself or your significantly chatelained other.
